Six things, in order

Essaouira is a slow visit. In the morning the light is low and the wind sleeps; in the afternoon it gets up. So we suggest the medina early and the coast later.

  • The medina, early Its ramparts and lanes are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. On foot, before the crowd, starting from Moulay Hassan square.
  • The Skala and the ramparts The bastions facing the Atlantic, the cannons, the line of the Purpuraire islands offshore.
  • The fishing port Blue boats, the auction, grilled fish at midday on the quay. A smell rather than a sight.
  • The thuya wood workshops Below the Skala: Essaouira marquetry is a local craft, and watching is as much the point as buying.
  • Sidi Kaouki, to the south A long open beach, horses and surfers. Half a day, not an hour.
  • Our coast, to the north Moulay Bouzerktoune and Tissa beach: the wind is cleaner and there is almost nobody. It is in front of the hotel.

How many days do you need in Essaouira?
Two days cover the medina, the port and the ramparts. Three or four if you also want the coast: Sidi Kaouki to the south, Moulay Bouzerktoune to the north, and one morning doing nothing by the water.
When should you come?
Essaouira is mild all year and far cooler than inland Morocco in summer. The wind is strongest in spring and summer — perfect if you are coming to sail, worth knowing if you are coming to sunbathe.
How do you get from Marrakech to Essaouira?
By road, about 190 kilometres and roughly two hours forty-five. There are regular buses to the Essaouira coach station, and we also arrange a private door-to-door transfer, including from Marrakech airport.
Do you need a car?
No. The medina is walked, not driven, and is closed to traffic. We are 25 minutes north and we arrange every trip from reception, there and back.
What is there to do when it is too windy for the beach?
That is the best moment for the medina, the thuya wood workshops and the port. And at the house: the infinity pool is sheltered, so is the yoga room, and horse rides often happen when the wind drops at the end of the day.
